Potable Water Taste and Odor Control

Permanganate is a potent oxidizing agent used primarily for water treatment purposes such as controlling taste and odors, removing color, controlling biological growth in treatment plants, and removing iron and manganese. It is also effective in preventing the formation of trihalomethanes and other disinfection byproducts by oxidizing precursors and reducing the need for other disinfectants.

Water Solutions Unlimited offers 20% and 40% liquid sodium permanganate for various water treatment applications. In addition, permanganate has been found to lower the dose requirements of coagulants and improve clarification.

In full-scale water treatment processes, sodium or potassium permanganate is commonly added early in the treatment process at the raw water intake. Permanganate oxidation can be followed by conventional treatment and filtration, granular activated carbon (GAC), membrane filtration, and chlorine disinfection.

The effectiveness of permanganate application is influenced by the dosage, contact time, pH, and temperature. Typical doses range between 0.1 and 5 mg/L, depending on water quality and application point, with an average dose of approximately 1 mg/L.
